Grayling fishing - Slovenia

Nice September for some Dryfly fishing!

Luckily we can post that the fly fishing conditions entering the second half of the September month are still good! Most of the rivers in Slovenia are at their optimal or low levels. Sava Dolinka tends to be white, even in the upper areas above the Moste Dam.. that effects also a bit the Sava river from the confluence down. We believe that the Sava Dolinka might clear out in the last week of the September – just perfect to plan some Grayling trips!

If you meet the hatch on the rivers these days – it is going to be a challenge.. small chironomidaes, tiny emergers, small ants.. leaders 7X are obligatory. If you happen to meet a larger trout not too deep down, you might as well present a big dry fly.. like the Stimulator or so.. 3/5 attempts they will go for it! But you do not want to mess up the strike – Only once you get the bait usually. Than fish loose their interest..

Faunaflyshop Bled opens daily at 08am to help you out with some advice about where to go and what areas to fly fish.. September is a popular FF month and there are several German groups of the fly fisherman on the area of Bled in these days so make sure you consult with us regarding the less busy areas and rivers. Looking forward meeting you!

Better can`t get! Fly fishing dream came true!

TWO HUCHEN in one fishing day!? No way… Seriously?

Well, glad you surfed on the page… this here is worth your time reading: Yes, it did happen in the past that somebody got 2 Hucho-huchos in one day. Maybe even three.. But I do not quite remember when some one landed two OVER 1M size in one fishing day!?

But Hucho-hucho fishing is full of surprises and what seemed to be impossible to achieve – happened yesterday! Visiting team of CH anglers, Robin Ruffini and Andy Furrer on their 1st time visit in Slovenia, chasing Hucho on the Sava Bohinjka river.. Day 1 went by with a lost strike, which was a stressful experience, especially since that might be the only strike of their visit.. But the faith had other plans… Day 2 a shower of the rain milked up the river a bit.. When already wanting to leave the pool, AL got that special feeling – go, Robin, make one more cast… BAAAANGGG!!! 115er on line!! All that drama etc and they thought that`s it.. let us finish this special day in a relax atmosphere – we already have our trophy fish.. But in the evening…. BAAANGGG No.2!!! 110-er!!!?? OMG!! Speechless I am regardless all the text I had just wrote!! Haaack.. how can now one repeat this new Hucho fly fishing tag!!?? but like we said – EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE with this DEMON of Hucho!!

As some anglers consider that having a HUCHO FISHING GUIDE is just another person walking the river with you (and if the Huchen guide is not a Pro. that might even be true.. FB is full of “wanna be hucho guides” in real life, Hucho Guide is what makes all the difference when the moment of your glory happens!! Hooking a fish is 70% but the rest  is landing and handling it! Here is when you learn what a good Hucho guide means!

Fishing Hucho – Snow put the fish on the move!

December month we go and fly fish for the Hucho! With the changing weather every serious hucho fisherman should be on the river, especially if the change means snow! Somehow this weather situation puts the Hucho in action to feed! The last week, fish activity was increasing as you can see in the gallery below – rainbow trout was striking well.. It was just a question of time when the Huchen will make mistake and grab the streamer! And it did.. Medium sized, but nevertheless a very good looking healthy fish it was! Bigger Huchos usually pick up the action a bit later since their stomachs don`t need to feed as frequent as the younger Huchen must. But they will need to feed – sooner or later :-) When that happens – one can just hope to be there at the right spot!

Strikes reporting in – Huchos on the move!

Rainy November about to say goodbye and December knocks in with the colder and more dry days! Waters of the Sava Bohinjka river going back to their normal levels and the Huchos moving with them too! While in the higher levels Hucho-hucho usually roams around and away from his home pool, with the dropping water they return to the home pool areas.. this makes them a bit more easy to locate and locating them is a half of the strike-on project!

Fishing condition for the week ahead seems to be steady.. a bit of everything but not flooding up or snow blizzard events… GOOO HUCHEN FISCHEN – or Fishing the same for us :-)

Cold mornings and pleasant FLY FISHING during the day

September as we will remember for a long time! Sunny weather brought lots of the fly fisherman out here on the Sava Bohinjka river to get some autumn Trout or Grayling on possibly dry fly. But despite the nice weather, colder water makes fish feeding very selectively when we talk surface feeding (dry fly). Many refusal on typical autumn patterns of the dries, can get you into trouble.. Your fly box must have patterns down to size #22 if you want to persuade a mouth or two to kiss the surface :-)

SHOULD I HIRE A FLY FISHING GUIDE WHEN VISITING SLOVENIA!?

What is one of the first thoughts once you decide to go to fly fish in Slovenia? Do I need a fly fishing guide! Our answer would be: probably you do! And since every reasonable statement needs an argument, here are ours;

1. When you arrive in Slovenia, there will be some 40 fly fishing districts waiting for you and you will not always have reliable idea about fishing conditions or water levels on them. Easy to find and park places are usually poor in fly fishing performance.. What you should target are secret spots, hidden paths and a bit remote fly fishing areas, which are only listed in the fishing Guide`s heads..

slo-mapa1
There are many fly fishing rivers in Slovenia. There is even more of choices if you consider all those rivers are divided among different fishing associations and clubs.. choice of where to go on the fly fishing might get a bit complicated..

2.You had chose a river and the fishing area of Slovenia to fly fish on and Fauna Fishing centre confirmed you that the water level is fine. Problem might be appearing now is, that the chosen river is possibly 15 or more km long and in runs in some rocky part of Slovenia`s nord-west.. Before you locate and arrive to the river without knowing those hot spots, there will be a half day of your fly fishing vacation lost!  😐

3. You had find the nice Slovenian fly fishing river and it is in good fishing condition – great, we at Fauna fly shop Bled had kindly advise you some hot spots on it, so the troubles should stop here right? Maybe.. but there are a small, bush-hidden paths that leads along the river and they are not marked on any map.. Uups, another fishing hour gone again. And it has been the morning one probably, usually the better part of the fishing day, especially in the summer time.

4. You had found a hot fly fishing area on a nice and probably not cheap Slovenian river (Unica, Soca, Krka Trophy, Sava Bohinjka Trophy part) and you see a lot of trout and grayling feeding actively. After an hour of casting you still don`t have a strike, but fish is all over the place.. Well, a hint regarding the choice of best fly pattern from an experienced fly fishing guide would come very handy yes? If such situation happens by the way, you most likely didn`t notice the small insect which triggered the fish to start feeding on them.. Some times hook size 22 is what meets the hatch size 😉

5. You had managed to find all the mentioned and managed to pick the right fly and you had a great time out there.. But behold! You had spend 2-3 days of your precious vacation time to managed that. With a fly fishing guide it would take you a day.
We could talk more about the advantages of having a professional fly fishing guide on the rivers which are not actually your backyard. But all who are open minded for a common sense, have enough facts on the table. Relax now and watch the video below. It will make you feel good inside :-)

Fauna Fly Fishing shop in Bled will be glad to help you out even if you still decide to go fly fishing on your own. Having special maps and all the fishing permits for the majority of fly fishing rivers in Slovenia we are definitely a place to visit once you arrive in Slovenia. After all, we have no argument against exploring pioneer spirit of our fly fisherman if we meet one!
