Kind-a special July 2020 – as the whole year being very particular – showers and storms keep the temperatures on the rivers at the normal degrees. No super hot heat waves like in 2019, levels of most Slovenian rivers remaining low but fishable. Unica dropped below 40cm level which might mean very selective feeding of Grayling.. the rest of the major rivers like Sava Bohinjka, Soca, Idrijca, Radovna etc. will prefer smaller patterns, darker in general and of most importance – 7X tippet material! No wonder fly will do any good if you gonna attach it on a 4X tippet material hah!
Yes, July in particular nice this year! Like the nature would like to redeem herself for the wet June we had been facing previously. Evening showers or even storms keeping the rivers in good shape and keeping the fish active also during the day. Normally, July would be having some action on the river early in the morning and late afternoons, but now one can nicely fly fish also during the day. Sava Bohinjka having average angler visit, if you come to our Fly shop we can decide which of the 3 areas of the river is less busy on a chosen day..
COVID- no new restrictions except wearing masks when you enter in some shops. SLOVENIA does not have any major infection increasing and is consider safest Balkan area state for the visit! If you follow basic hygienic rules – you almost have no chance to infect yourself if visiting Bled area and surrounding villages!

Weather forecast for the following days – ALL GOOD and SAFE TO COME!
Surely hundreds of us fly fisherman and woman staying grounded worldwide! News from Slovenia – 1st hand without the media pomp: life is severely stopped now true.. but if you walk on the empty streets of Bled or other hot-spots – it kind-a still feels normal. Desolated, true, but yet a bit normal. Rivers are now hand full only of anglers, few solitary local anglers and very few tourist fly fisherman. Not that they would not be left in Slovenia- borders can be passed if you area healthy. the problem is local isolation in the home countries like Italy, Austria, Germany, Hungary etc.. that is basically what is keeping the fly fisherman away… No news on the fly fishing horizon so far.. Main season opens with April 1st, but obviously no real crowd is expected.. how could.. the damn Covid is still around and we can only hope that higher spring temperatures will chase it away eventually… mentioned temperatures – next week SNOW is forecasted for the north-west Slovenia!
Beside that, Fauna Team all well, tying some flies, making some Hucho advertising to be published later, etc.. We wish you lots of health and patience, this are probably the hardest times to face in the last decades – but did a fly fisherman ever gave up? Not that we remember 😉
stay in contact we shall be informing you more regularly now how the situation is improving..
We said goodbye to another great October month and at the same time welcome the November – except that the second is far away from nice for now; Heavy rain in the early few days of the November pushed most of the rivers in Slovenia high and coloured. Several rivers closed down with October 31st and what is left open in November is at the moment too high for some reasonable fly fishing.
Keep in minds that the Sava Bohinjka will be fishable in all 3 sections till November 14th.. But this week hardly.. Tuesday 5th is delivering more rain and that surely won`t improve the fishing situation on the river..
If some fisherman on the area and don`t really know what to do – there are two smaller artificial lakes open where fly fishing can land some Trout! Give us a call or pop in to talk things out. Fauna fly shop open daily from 900-1500 hours.
well, this time there is not much guessing needed – do not expect any major improvement in the north-west Slovenia till the end of this week.. more of the water on the way towards our area as we speak.. 😕
Few more of the Fly Fishing days left till the end of October, which again – the third year in a row happens to be a top fly fishing month! In all the month there were only 3-4 poor weather fishing days, but even those were do-able with a streamer and heavier nymphs! All the rest – sun and dry/nymph action!
Let us refresh some key dates considering the Fly fishing season at this point;
Sava Bohinjka at Bled (lower) and Bohinj (upper) fishing area will remain open for the fly fishing till November 14th
Sava Bohinjka Institute (middle) fishing area will remain open for the Fly fishing until November 30th
Radovna will be closing for fly fishing with October 31st
Sava Dolinka will be closing for the fly fishing with October 31st
Sava river (Big Sava) will close for the fly fishing with October 31st
Unica river remains open for the Fly fishing till November 30th
Soca river closing with October 31st
Weather fishing wizard guessing:
It seems that the Indian summer of the October is ending…. early next week can still be pleasant and quite warm, while the Wednesday will turned to be much colder – in best case! Might bring also few snow flakes.. but definitely temperatures are going down big time. Keep in touch if you have some fishing plans on the way…
Holidays opening time of the Fauna Fly Shop in Bled:
Hey there!! Getting into the second half of October month fly fishing in Slovenia – so far- so good! Weather cooperates, having the average temperatures around 18degrees ALL rivers in Slovenia fine to fly fish at.. Some have normal levels, other a bit low but in general safe to come and fish! If talking dry flies, emergers down to #18 will do fine..
Note No. 1: UNICA RIVER hence October 1st dropping the price of the daily permit from regular Eur 99,00/day down to Eur 79,00/day. River fishing well during the day, take the oportunity while the weather lasts! Fishing permit available also in the Fauna fly shop Bled. Open daily at 08am
Note No. 2: during the working days of the week, the Institute part of the Sava Bohinjka can go white from time to time.. obviously the construction works at the bridge Log are not yet finish! See our previous news to find the map where this particularity might be happening..
Hack – this one just landed in the Sava Bohinjka yesterday;
Rainbow trout fishing rolls on as well… but the larger ones are getting a bit selective in feeding.. If they become interested for the surface food, than you might be ending up with a midge “20! Well, if this is not quite your class of dry flies, than good old streamer will do the job well..
Weather wizzard for the next week
More or less seems to be safe… the only two days of the rain probably won`t rise the levels since at the moment most of the fly fishing rivers in Slovenia are considered to be low.
Video from the river – Sava Bohnjka Bled fishing club
Another end of the week is here – fly fishing rolls with a normal pace but visiting fisherman should keep an eye on the coming Sunday July 28th when we expect some heavier T-storms in the nord -west and east parts of Slovenia.. (Soca, Sava Bohinjka, Savinja, Baca, Idrijca etc..) While today Friday 26th already heard some Thunders, rain still keeps away.. Very steamy air pushed the fly fishing into the earliest morning hours which can be the very best part of the day! Many fly fisherman are on the area with their families or wife, GF, BF etc along, so compromises needs to be taken.. (different nations, the same patterns of behaviour hahahha).. hitting the rivers at 5:30 am, returning to breakfast at 1000 and late afternoon till the 2100 – that works best! Sava Bohinjka, Soca, under the pressure of the regular folks but mostly during the day time.. mornings are quiet and fine..
Levels so far – normal for the time of the season and not yet too low.. Trout is picky and either hits on the midge or big Goddard caddis – sizes in between more or less do not get their interest.. Grayling hunters – early mornings try with some small klinks or red-tags down on #18-20.. few nice catches reported in during last few days – all using the mentioned flies..
Sava Dolinka not yet cooperating well, since the power station dam Moste uses a weird time-table for opening the turbines – during the night closed, opens at 800.. spoils the day nicely :-/ The rumours are out that this might come from the silent cooperation between the raft Companies and the Dam Co.. the following prefers to have higher levels during the day to perform the drifting boat tours easier.. hack – again fly fishermen pulling the shortest straw.. :-/
Stay in touch early next week, when we report back what has happened during the Sunday`s T-storm performance and with the latest river situation.. and have a great cold end of the week!
Dear all fly fishing fans, true – we kept you off the news for a few weeks – sorry for doing that! Nothing new in fact was going on by the Sava Bohinjka, weeks and weeks or steady fly fishing condition, trout were landed, grayling as well, hatches late evening-night almost during the day small nymphs or streamers – that is it what has been happening in the last 3 weeks.
Hence onward we are getting into the real summer with the typical summer conditions – and here is where the Fauna fishing news steps in again;
Summer brought a lot of folks on the river banks doing all kind of different things out there.. Keep in mind that very early morning 06am till lets say 10-11am you will have all of the river for yourself, while from 11is till 18th better keep away or seek for remote corners or you will be embraced by the BBQ families, kids throwing stones, half nude woman (that we allow) and other distracting factors..
The upper areas of the Sava Bohinjka – namely fishing club Bohinj suffers a lot from the kayak, boat, sup etc river traffic while having also the lowest levels of all 3 fishing clubs.. not saying you should not go there to fly fish but if so – read the above line.
Institute part of the Sava Bohinjka doing well, levels fine and temperature of the river still cold enough to give the fish some fighting power.. positive feedback we receive on a daily basis!
Bled fishing part of the Sava Bohinjka – doing fine as well. Not many anglers on the river but during the day proximity of a tourist town Bled brings some international visitors in different forms and brain capacities – top-less females we tolerate. Again – 06am be on the river if possible..
Sava Dolinka finally getting in shape after all the spring she suffered snow melt or rain levels.. the one seeking a true robinson fishing – take the Sava Dolinka.
Big Sava river – getting more and more interesting target while the levels of the Bohinjka slowly dropping and the Sava Dolinka getting clearer.. keep your radar on that one too!
Krka river – low and grass growing up
Unica river – fine but early morning and late afternoon
Radovna river – great, with enough level, NO BOAT traffic, NO swimmers and few anglers/day only. Always fresh breeze in that valley – surely a place to be if you are a fly fisherman visiting in July..
Flies to use during this period….
going dry fly than midge is a must during the day, small gnats, micro red-tags grizzly colored etc… Streamer works as well.. olive, white are dominant colours these days… nymphs no larger than #16 reducing the shine to minimum if possible. Fluorocarbon 6X even 7X is a must. Load it in the Fauna fly shop – we always keep a fresh stock!
Weather fishing wizard saying
July is quite fresh comparing with the previous years – good for fishing we must say! More active fish and a bit less swimmers in the river.. But the storms are behind every corner if we may say so – light rain shelter jacked must be close all the time. Overall the weather is supportive for the fly fishing purposes and tours. Easily you can plan a day or two if you want..
Huuh.. yesterday Tuesday afternoon we have had a propper shower in the nord-west Slovenia! Several rivers jumped up and turned into a hot chocolate! But today, Wednesday morning, drama is over and the situation is getting back to normal.. Sava Bohinjka in the Bled and Institute part will be semi-clear during today, while up in the Bohinj area will turn normal colored already during the day.. Consider that this shower did not add to lowering the levels of the Sava Bohinjka which will keep the strong currents trend that is lasting since the early June when the sun triggered a bit of the snow melt.. But overall – fishing conditons can be declared NORMAL from tomorrow onward. Weather till Sunday seems jolly good!! Radovna river – fine, clear just stronger current. Idrijca river – fine, Soca a bit opaque due to yesterdays storm.. we will be in touch later today or tomorrow morning with more video of the upper areas…
Hi back fellow fly fisherman! Sorry for not being able to post the news sooner, but the Fauna Fly Shop is in these days under an immense pressure of the “hatching anglers” if I may call many different visiting groups in that way
It has become very obvious now, how the super wet and cold May month was keeping down many fly fisherman seeking for some spring time fly fishing.. and now, when the green lights “go fly fishing” are finally turning on – everybody wants to be the 1st one to arrive on the spots! Well, there is enough of space on those many Slovenian rivers, but meeting some other anglers will be a daily must in the weeks to follow..
My ears in the Fauna fly shop are widely open, and regardless the fact that I can not (saaaadly) go on the fly fishing every day, this is what I had learn from the fellow fishing visitors:
Short comments and fly fishing gossips:
Sava Bohinjka, the very upper area of the fishing club Bohinj, these days hosting many anglers, mostly German, Belgium and French fisherman.. why? the spring-like levels of the river are still strong in currents despite being crystal clear.. and the more up the river you go (Sava Bohinjka) the less currents you gonna be experience! This is the basic fact that the area is very populated in the last days.. and you can catch also some fine large Trout – so we heard.. Most of the larger fish is still down deep and mostly feeds on the nymph.. Dry will bring you enough catch, but will be smaller in size. Try to avoid the bridge in Brod and Savica – several French anglers literary occupied the area and is hard to get a free slot in between of them.
Sava Bohinjka – Institute (middle part) – Increasing traffic of Italian anglers forecast for the ends of this week, arriving with the dry fly action attempts.. The hatch today was happening strongest in the morning, 8:30 – 11ish, than the sun put the heat down and the fish went back down.. small but heavy nymph was the best reply to offer.. Larger trout also strikes hard on some smaller streamer imitation mostly of the white colour, presented close to the bottom.. (sink tips are a welcome gear to have). Wider configuration of the river bed in the Institute makes the currents feel a bit less strong than on the other areas.. Saturday and Sunday June 8,9 stronger pressure of the Italian anglers is to be expected – of course welcoming them, since we only saw a hand full of them in the May month 😉
Sava Bohinjka Bled area (lowest of all 3 clubs: BLED TROPHY part is almost sold out for the end of the week, with only few more rods left on the Saturday.. any intention to be one of them – do not hesitate to contact us via ph. or e-mail to book you in! Other areas out of the trophy are not really under the pressure since the currents are still strong and every body is thinking that in the upper fishing clubs will be a better fishing due to less current – eeeee… wrong! Bled regular parts are a good hide out away from the FF masses and the fish are as active than everywhere else… the one who has eyes – let him read!
Radovna river: almost neglected since the masses of Fly fisherman attached the Sava Bohinjka. But those few who went on the Radovna lately reported back a very positive news, fish not big but very active and almost nobody on the whole river length – not to mention a drop-dead gorgeous spring surrounding nature of the Radovna valley. You want to roam alone on your fly fishing day? Go to the Radovna river!
Savinja river: so we heard that the permits for the Trophy areas (30/day) are also sold out till Monday next week! Better make a call to their fishing club before staring your journey via Savinja! So you do not stay empty permit handed once arriving! Fishing should be ok if the river is sold-out!
Krka river: this is a area to consider! In the next day she will be reaching her optimal levels! And since the big eye of the FF is not looking at her – this might be a place to be! Fishing season on the Krka river is like 3 weeks ahead of the Alpine rivers area – hatches are stronger! We can provide the fishing permits, but they go for Eur 70,00/day. If you hit the right day – investment can be well rewarded by brownies feeding on the surface more than on the nymphs!
Unica river – still in the process of dropping down the levels to reasonable, not yet perfect.. have patient, once the levels drop – fishing will be exploading!
Idrijca – levels perfect but fishing demanding due to the low temperature of the river. Fish feeds quite selectively and if you want to be sure you gonna make a good quota – take the Trophy part permit.. on the regular one you might be suffering..
Soca river – getting back to normal, but suffering snow melt.. streamer and nymph ok – dry still not on the maximum.. but if you are on the area, go fishing – later weeks and lower levels will be bringing dozens and dozens of the anglers!
Lepena (tributary to the Soca river) – jam packed with the anglers – try to find some alternative, since the poor little stream can not take any more human inside..
Big Sava river – in short words – she is big. too big and too white since the Sava Dolinka is bringing white colour due to the snow melt and rain supplies gathered in the month May..
Sava Dolinka: where in the current is mostly white and not yet mature for some nice fly fishing.
Sava Dolinka Power station lake: belly boat area – reporting very good fish activity! Whater is white with some brown alga patches here and there – but you might score up to 20 good size trout/day! Green lights for the lake belly boaters shinning bright!
Sora – all fine, fishing fine..
Well, you see what can a man learn by working in the fly shop! Surely the above is valid for a few days only, than everything might be changing, but in general I believe the actual situation is well described!
Weather fishing Wizard saying: up to the balls you will be freezing, above the belt you will be boiling! And that is true, water temperature very low, while the Sun will be reaching up to the hey- 34! degrees on Tuesday next week!
